RulesQuick OverviewDuring the race, athletes cannot block or hinder each other or race in what is deemed a dangerous manner. If it happens during the swimming leg, the guilty party is required to stop for 30 seconds at the end of the swim before continuing. During the cycling and running legs, a race official may issue a warning with a yellow card. The athlete must stop and await the official's word to continue. For more dangerous or repeat offences, an athlete can be disqualified with a red card. In this sense, triathlon penalties are the same as soccer’s -- two yellow cards during a race results in a red card and automatic disqualification.Officials are proactive in issuing warnings during a race to prevent violations from occurring. However, they are not required to warn an athlete before showing him or her a yellow card. The emphasis is on assuring the race goes smoothly so race officials have to intervene as little as possible. The (official) course is usually a 1.5-kilometre open-water swim, a 40-kilometre bike, and a 10-kilometre run. A major rule in triathlon is that in the cycling portion, drafting is legal.
